Red Rattler, Heavy Horses and a Ferry Ride

Back onto the coast means sea, sun and sand….or as we had it…..wind, sea, and more wind, with the occasional bit of stunning scenery and then some more wind.

And it’s not just ordinary wind, this is needle wind, that kind of piercing wind that goes straight through the 4 layers of jumpers and coats and chills your bones!

But it was worth it  for the experiences. Mostly, we drove around from lookout to lookout going “wow” or “shhezus” depending on the roads and their steepness.

Victor Harbor has Granite Island that is connected by a causeway, sounds normal enough, but here you have the opportunity for a horse-drawn tram. A carriage pulled by a Clydesdale, called “Scotty”. It takes about 15 minutes for the 1 horsepower tram to carry you across to the island unless Scotty catches a whiff a carrot, then it might be quicker!

Once there, you can walk around the island at your leisure, but it takes you about 30 minutes, then you can horse it or walk back.

Other than that, it’s a great place to shop, restock, and recharge……speaking of which the new battery is going great…..,so after 2 nights, we moved on to Goolwa essentially to catch up with family, but before we did, we took a heritage train from Goolwa back to Victor Harbor and back again.(kinda like the hobbits book’tothere and back again’)

The train was a 1950’s railcar, diesel powered, and bright red. It was called a red hen,but we christened it the Red Rattler as it bounced, swayed, and rattled itself along. But it was good fun all the same.

Then it was family time, catching up with cousins whom we had not seen for years…… good fun and amazing to be  there, and visiting places with some local knowledge.

But all good things end, and we were back on the road, checking out waterfalls and abandoned cottages.

Then onto the ferry for our Kangaroo Island experience, one of the highlights we were looking forward to.

Jo did a great job backing Little Bus onto the ferry between the trucks, we settled back, munching on a box of shapes for the 45 minute trip to KI
