In Search of Wombats- A Midnight Intruder

A MIDNIGHT INTRUDER

As you remember from the last post we were in the Wittelbee Conservation park near Ceduna… wondering why we had it mostly to ourselves!

Well it was 11pm all was quiet on the snoring front, fast asleep, when I felt something in my hair, gently scratching at my scalp…..OK awake now… “Jo was that you?” “hhmmph what?” “playing with my head was that you?”  “no…” “ummm ok well something was!” ok we were both up, we had seen some giant beetles earlier so my thought was one had crawled in and I had felt it in my hair….. still gave me the collie wobbles though….. we couldn’t see anything in the bed, nothing in the sheets on the floor or anything so… OK try and go back to sleep, lay there then heard scratching and scuffling from below us (well Jo said below I thought above” OK Collie wobbles back again we were up, lights on, checking everything and here I am lying on my tummy looking under the bed when a wee little field mouse popped its head round the corner, “Boo” it said , well I jumped and it jumped and started running towards we… with massive huge fangs and a hungry hint in its little beady eyes…. “Jo!… open the door it’s a mouse!” and I grabbed the nearest thing to me…. The table leg….. well it’s actually a pipe with a bend in it, hollow and perfect for little mouses to run into…. That’s no good dropped the pipe and the beastie backed off disappeared around the back seat of the van again….. Then it’s on, looking for him, all we found was some mouse poo where Flynn (as we have christened him) had obviously got scared and said “ha-ha that’ll teach ya” . pooped and run away…

The rest of the night was a little unsettled but uneventful, Flynn had not reappeared, Nor scored some hair for its nest, Nor eaten half a leg while we slept.

Next morning pull everything out, nothing had been eaten, nothing disturbed and no sign of Flynn. Packed up and left he had, or so we hoped, jumping for his life when we opened the back door…. Or gone to get some reinforcements….

I vaguely remember something about mice so rechecked the review of the campsite…. Apparently one review mentioned lots of mice, but being only one of many and a month ago didn’t really think it significant….. more fool I.
