A Murchison Meander- Wildflowers of 2022

Wannamal to Wongan

This trip actually took place back a couple of months back just after our four day wheat belt trip, so basically these next few are catch up posts.

A Murchison Meander- Wildflowers of 2022

So here we are day 2 of a little trip up into the Murchison perhaps one of my favourite parts of the world, so varied, great scenery, true outback and true outback hospitality, currently we are sitting 15m away from the shore of Lake Ninan, where the heck is that?, well its Wongan Hills, we left Perth yesterday, a full 24 hours before we thought we would, spent last at Wannamal, one of our favourite rest area free camps about 150km north of Perth, a bit of the spur of the moment but that’s the great thing about the campervan just throw in some food and clothes and you are off! So, in the morning, we went up the road to Moora only 40km away, On the way through we stopped at Mogumber, if you are passing through Mogumber then you must check out the teddy bear massacre in the old Eucalypt opposite the black bull pub! Body count currently at about 18!. There is also a nice old stone cottage right for photographing as well.

In Moora we had to get some stuff that we forgot, very important stuff like Chocolate, dips for the chips, and also mundane stuff like cleaning cloths, being a little under the weather we also got some fisherman’s friends! Toddled around the town for a while, especially liked the sculptures in the peace park. Drove around some of the back roads looking for any evidence remaining from the old army camps but didn’t find a thing except brown signs telling us where they used to be. So, of to Walebing and found that too doesn’t exist anymore but the old cottages just down the road at the turn of to Piawanning are worth a photo.

Lunch in Piawanning behind the hall, a great little spot with 2 resident white corellas who take great joy in scaring the beejebus out of anyone walking under their tree. Once my heart rate came back down and Jo finished laughing it was just a short hop down to Wongan Hills.

We intended to spend 48 hours in the area, exploring some nature reserves for the renowned wildflowers. We had decided to stay at a spot called the gap, but first wanted to check out the Mt O’brien lookout which is well worth the drive, but a steep corrugated ascent to get there and no turning room for caravans would make you think twice about towing so just do don’t do it. The views form the top are eye catchingly spectacular. Little bus spun her wheels a bit but made it up fine. Going down we thought we would try out the traction aid button and the descent was well controlled with no real ‘pucker factor’ involved.

So as we said we were going to stay at the gap but it was little more than a gravel pit, so we decided to head down to Lake Ninan on the other side of Wongan hills along with 2000 flies each and 3 other campers, but a great view over the lake with some ducks lazily bobbing on the surface. On arrival we were greeted by a few dozen mozzies. Good job they were too big to get through the flyscreen also had a few sand flies but a spray, a fly net and a beer and we sat outside and enjoyed the sunset, one of the simple pleasures left in life before retreating inside the van for night.
